The Power of Poetry

How does poetry heal?

Poetry is an easier way for people to express the way something or someone makes them feel. Often it is difficult for people to speak on challenging topics openly, so poetry is a way to engrave these feelings into an art. Everyone can heal in their own way when writing poetry.

When speaking about brain surgery to remove his cancer, a patient wrote this poem.

I felt I lost my edge
and then I lost my place but the tragedy is
I have so much to say.

(Hindawi)

People facing extreme life circumstances and realities can find some solace when having the freedom to express themselves when they’re not sure what to say.

What can poetry heal?

Though poetry can help people tremendously through difficult times, it also can have an impact on physical health.

Some Health Benefits of Poetry are:

  • therapeutic effects on the immune system

  • medical health markers on asthma, cancer, and arthritis patients

  • lower muscle tension

  • drop in perspiration levels

  • lower blood pressure

  • lower heart rate levels

  • positive short and long-term mood changes

  • positive behavioral effects in the form of school and work performance

(Hindawi)

Taking a few minutes a day to jot down some words or a poem is a healing way to express deep feelings and desires and offers positive health benefits. At Zen Zone Mind and Body we offer the Expressions event where people can gather and share poetry and other written inspirations with the group. Lean more about Zen Zone Expressions.
