What is Qigong?

Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice that includes gentle movement, breath work, visualization techniques, and strength training and is derived from a 4,000-year-old Chinese philosophy. It uses meditation, relaxation, and aerobic conditioning to control the life force energy inside of our own bodies.  It has been proven to increase bone density and immune function as well as decrease high blood pressure and lower stress.

“Although there are nearly 5,000 styles of Qigong catalogued by the Chinese Government, all forms focus on manipulating life energy in a positive way.” (PC)

Qigong can help benefit our breathing, our posture, and stabilize our heart health. Read below to learn about two different types of Qigong.

Types of Qigong

“There are 2 main types of Qigong practice: internal and external.

Internal Qigong is the self-directed practice of techniques used to cultivate the circulation of Qi throughout the practitioner’s energy system. The practices involve meditation, subtle movement, visualization, and breathing techniques.

External Qigong is an interpersonal healing practice in which a practitioner projects Qi into another person in order to promote the recipient’s health or circulation of Qi.”

Benefits of Qigong

“Practicing QiGong lowers pulse rate, blood pressure, metabolic rates, and oxygen demand. Qigong activates, improves blood circulation, and balances the body’s life energies. After reducing hypertension and blood pressure, Qi Gong goes on to surprise us with more and more benefits to the human body.”(PC)

Qigong produces benefits for the body and heart such as…

  • Increased cardiac output

  • Decreased peripheral resistance

  • Improves oxygen uptake and the production of carbon dioxide

  • Reduces the risk of chronic heart disease

“A follow-up study of 244 hypertensive patients for 18 – 22 years showed a lower incidence and mortality because of stroke among hypertensives taking antihypertensive medications and practicing Qigong compared to a nonrandomized control group. At the same time, the requirement for medications was also lower.``( JOHH)

Qigong is an excellent exercise for patients with chronic heart disease and  provides benefits for clients who are looking to improve their quality of life.
